"Developing Confident Achievers for the World Community" |
Pastoral Care St Mary's Primary School (Altinure) aims to establish a caring environment within which the academic, personal, social and spiritual potential of each child will be developed. The pastoral dimension permeates all school activities. We in St Mary's have a primary responsibility for the care, welfare and safety of the pupils in our charge and we will carry out this duty through out pastoral care policy which aims to provide a caring, supportive and safe environment. Child Protection Everyone has a duty to protect children from physical, emotional or sexual abuse and from neglect. The child's welfare must always be paramount and this overrides all other consideration. The Child Protection Programme in this school seeks to support the child's development in ways which will foster security, confidence and independence. As it is central to the well-being of the child it will form an intrinsic part of all aspects of the curriculum. Positive Behaviour Our school operates a Positive Behaviour Management Programme based on Rules, Rewards and Consequences. Positive behaviour management promotes the core values of the school as expressed in our mission statement, "Developing Confident Achievers for the World Community".This Policy is based on a whole school approach, will be widely disseminated and readily understood by staff, pupils and parents through a process of consultation. It is dependent on a shared understanding of what is acceptable behaviour among members of the school community. It will have effective links with the school's Pastoral Care, Anti Bullying and Child Protection and SEN Policy. This policy is designed to promote good behaviour, rather than merely deter anti-social behaviour. Anti-Bullying All forms of bullying behaviour are wholly unacceptable. Consequently the school has a responsibility to ensure that the whole school community is pro-active in the prevention of bullying and where it occurs, adequate steps are taken to deal with the issues. Health and Education Health Education is taught in context of other subjects. Healthy eating habits are promoted and encouraged. Children are taught to understand that the well being of other children and themselves Is important and they are made aware of potential danger in and outside of school. Drugs Education We believe that this school has a vital preventative role to play in combating the misuse of drugs by young people and we therefore include a drugs education programme in our curriculum. We want our pupils to make informed and responsible decisions about drugs by increasing their knowledge and by developing in them appropriate values, attitudes and skills. However, we recognize that drug misuse is a whole-community issue and that schools alone cannot solve the drugs problem; the school is only one of a number of groups and agencies which must play a part in the education of young people and we make use of their expertise where possible in the delivery of the programme. Copies of the above policies can be obtained on request from the school. The Principal contacts parents if there is any cause for concern about their children.Parents worried about their children are welcome to come and discuss matters with the Principal or teacher. Meetings can be arranged through the school secretary. |
Schools Council A Students' Council has been in operation since September 2005. Pupils from Primary 5 - 7 are involved in the students council which meets monthly to discuss issues of concern and to suggest changes. This makes children part of the decisionmaking process. Minutes are recorded and reported on at staff meetings. |
