Special Educational Provision

In line with the Special Educational Needs and Disability (Northern Ireland) Order 2005
(SENDO), this school believes in an inclusive ethos. We aim to educate all pupils by ensuring
access to a broad and balanced curriculum, suitably differentiated to meet individual needs so
that all children may achieve their potential.

Where provision beyond what can be given by the class teacher is required, every attempt will
be made to provide this by the other staff in the school. If necessary the specialist services of
the Board's Special Education Section will be used.

The Staff under the guidance of the Special Needs Co-ordinator(SENCO) Mrs A M Hegarty
have put in place procedures for early identification of children with specific learning difficulties
under the terms of the Code of Practice for SEN.

We encourage parents to work closely with us in supporting children with learning difficulties
and involve them at each stage of the process.

If a parent has a concern regarding Special Educational Needs provision they are encouraged
to work in partnership with the school to try to resolve the issue. Where no solution can be
reached the WELB offers a special educational needs:
· Advice and Information Service
· Dispute Avoidance and Resolution Service (DARS)

Reporting and Assesssment

The academic progress of our pupils will be monitored on a regular basis, through the use of
formal and informal tests conducted at intervals throughout the year. The purpose of these
tests will be both formative and diagnostic, so that the teacher will know all the better how well
the pupil is learning and the remediation required.

Each parent will be kept informed of his child's progress through twice yearly parent/teacher
meetings, the annual written report which is issued in May of each year and other informal
meetings as and when necessary.

The teachers will keep detailed records of each child's work and progress, from Primary 1 to
Primary 7, so that a clear picture is available for all to see. Particular emphasis will be placed
on preparing pupils for the end of key stage tests so that the child will achieve his full potential.
The teaching staff will constantly evaluate their teaching and learning methods to ensure that
the curriculum remains relevant to the needs of the pupils and is delivered at a pace
appropriate to the ability of each pupil.

Pupil perfomance and development will be evaluated by appropriate assessment techniques
and the assessment will be reported to parents.
