In the 60 years between 1781 and
1841 the population in Ireland
increased from 3 million to 8 million.
The greatest increase in population
was in the poorest class, the people
who had very little or no land. Many
of the people survived by moving into
mountainous or boggy county and
growing just enough potatoes to keep
themselves alive. When there were
not enough potatoes they had to beg
or starve.
