Many schools were built between 1837 and 1901. There were several kinds of
different of schools for the poor. The older usually went to a day school on
Sundays. As for the younger ones a local woman in a room of her own house
usually taught them. Other schools were organised by churches or either by
charities. Among these there were the ragged schools, which were for orphans
and very poor children.

The classrooms had little fresh air because the windows were built high in the
walls so the children could not be distracted by whatever was going on outside.
Schools would last until 5pm with a 2hr lunch break. There would be as many
as many as 70 or 80 pupils in one class, especially in cities. The teachers were
very strict. The most important lessons were about the three R's Reading
wRiting and aRithmetic.
