MISSION STATEMENT OF THE MODEL SCHOOL
1. Our primary purpose is to enhance children's quality of learning through the effective and efficient delivery of the Northern Ireland Curriculum.

In the Model Primary School we believe that all children, teachers, staff, governors and parents form the members of our school community. We work in partnership with one another to make our learning environment one in which the children entrusted to the school's care will find an atmosphere of learning which will develop each pupil to its full potential.

The Model School is a controlled Educational Primary school administered by a Board of Governors, who are representatives of the Department of Education, Western Education and Library Board, Trustees, Parents and Teaching Staff. They are responsible for the legal and financial affairs of the school.
As a result of Open Enrolment, the Department of Education (NI) hasmaintained a maximum pupil limit of 380, with an admission number of 54 for YearOne. The enrolment for this year, which includes 26 full time nursery places is 343.This enrolment means that there are 11 full classes and 2 composite classeswith each class having an average of 26 pupils. Our classes provide an atmosphere of stability and security and a high level of individual attention in which each child may thrive.
Children must be 4 in the year in which they attend Nursery.
Pupils learn through play and through practical experience in a comprehensive range of activities, each carefully structured to develop a sound base for reading, writing and number skills.
These skills are introduced and enhanced by:
- improving physical co-ordination and manipulative control.
- introducing phonics and spatial discrimination.
- developing clear and confident communication skills.
- stimulating creativity and problem solving techniques.
- helping children become socially competent.
The Nursery children are helped to develop positive feelings about their relationships to school, teachers and other children in a secure and caring environment.
In line with N. Ireland curriculum policies and under the direction of curriculum co-ordinators school policies and programmes of study in all subject areas have been established and implemented. With these guidelines the Model finds itself well able to place our children at the forefront of education in N. Ireland.
Within the Northern Ireland Curriculum guidelines the Model seeks to involve every pupil in a learning experience which is stimulating, productive and will help each child to achieve their full potential.
In September 2007 the school introduced the programme of the Revised Curriculum in P1 and P5. This has been phased into other classes in subsequent years. Teachers have received appropriate training in implementing the requirements of the Revised Curriculum
The Model seeks to foster respect, confidence and self-esteem through its positive approach to discipline. We focus on commenting on "good" behaviour rather than always the "bad". Pupils and teachers agree rules for the classroom and playground with built in rewards for when they are adhered to and sanctions when they are not. Parents are asked to discuss these rules with their children and encourage them to keep them.
The school is very well resourced in all areas. The classrooms which are large andbright are well equipped with reading material and all have computers (linked to theInternet), colour monitors and the use of black and white or colour printers. The school also has a fully equipped computer suite.
Other facilities include a full sized hall with stage, music room, library, Parents' Room and KS1 structured playroom. In addition resource areas for equipment and materials necessary for science, reading, art, special needs, PE and KS1 have been set up.
Each class has a Whiteboard and DVD player. The school also possesses extensive playgrounds, an all-weather pitch and an environmental classroom provided by our mature site.
THE ROLE OF THE PARENTS
Good communication and a positive, co-operative relationship between home and school provide your child with the best basic for success. The school encourages parental involvement and participation in many areas:-
- ¨ Parent Representatives on the Board of Governors
- ¨ School visits and educational trips.
- ¨ Fund-raising (Parents played a major role in the organisation and raising of our most successful annual fund-raising and social event, our Summer Fete which helped raise over £2,000 for school funds).
- ¨ Extra Curricular Activities (Parents are most welcome to take a club or lend a helping hand).
- ¨ Paired Reading and Paired Maths
- ¨ The school has a Parents' Notice board and a Parent-Teachers Association.
In the Autumn Term parents are invited to meet the class teacher for a private and confidential discussion about their child's progress.The Autumn meeting reviews how the child has settled into a new class, identifies strengths and weaknesses and encourages the development of a working rapport between home and school.During the Summer term a written School Report is sent home. It is however, important for parents to realise that the school is there to help and that teachers and the principal can be contacted at anytime to discuss queries or concerns. Potential problems are best dealt with quickly and therefore parents simply need to contact the School Secretary who will arrange a mutually convenient time for appointment within a few days.
THE MODEL SCHOOL IN THE COMMUNITY
The school building facilitates a number of community activities including the Western Education and Library Board orchestras and choirs and St. John's Ambulance. It also hosts classes for parents which are run by the Open University and the North West Institute for Further and Higher Education respectively.
The annual Carol Service is held in Christ Church, while First Communion and Confirmation take place in St Eugene's Cathedral. Because the school has a central location, it is able to avail of the wealth of resources on its doorstep - Central Library, the Nerve Centre, Foyle Arts Centre, the Verbal Arts Centre, the Fire Station and the Tower Museum to name a few.
Businesses in the area provide generous sponsorship for the Summer Fete which is enjoyed by everyone in the school and the wider community. Charities supported by the school include:

LINKS WITH OTHER SCHOOLS
The school has developed close links with the nearby Londonderry Nursery and through the Extended Schools Initiative is a member of a cluster group which regularly meets to discuss innovative ways of enhancing the curriculum.
When children are at the end of Year 4 and Year 7 in Northern Ireland teachers arerequired to make formal assessments of their work in English and Mathematics.
Parents of pupils at the end of Key Stage 1 will receive from the school:-
* a statement of the subject level at which your child is judged to be working in English and Mathematics and
* a summary of the levels achieved in English and Mathematics by children in the same year group in the school.
Parents of pupils at the end of Key Stage 2 will receive a Summative Record of Achievement containing:
* a statement of the level at which your child is judged to be working in English and Mathematics in each of the attainment targets;
* information about progress in all other subjects.
* information about any other certificates your child may have obtained; and
* information about your child's involvement in extra-curricular activities at the school.
The School year is divided into three terms. The year begins in early September and continues until late June, with approximately two week breaks for the Christmas and Easter Holidays and a Half-Term break during each term.
The School Day
The School follows a 5 day week from Monday to Friday. Times are as follows:
Nursery: 9.00 am - 1.40 pm
Primary: P1 - P2 9:00 am - 1:50 pm
P3 - 9:00 am - 2:55 Monday to Friday
9:00 am - 1:50 Friday
P4 - P7 9:00 am - 2:55 pm
Parents of Nursery and P1 - P2 pupils should accompany their children to their classroom each morning. The school actively encourages parents to go into the classroom for the first few minutes in the morning. These short visits help your child settle and reinforce parent teacher understanding.
Children from P3 - P7 may be left off at school anytime after 8:30 am. They are supervised in the hall until the bell at 8:45 am, when they can move to their classrooms in preparation for the start of formal work at 9:00 am.
The school cannot accept responsibility for children who arrive at school prior to 8:30 am.
In the interests of pupil safety, parents are not permitted to drive or park within the school grounds. Parents are asked to use the parking facility at Academy Road and use the side entrance of school.
In addition the school now offers the facility of a "Breakfast Club". Pupils can avail of a breakfast in the school from 8.15 until 8. 50. This is subsidised by the "Extended Schools Initiative" allowing pupils to have a breakfast before classes start.
Children attend regular assemblies throughout the week and they are an important element of the school's life. Teachers and pupils frequently conduct assemblies which vary in nature and content, but continually emphasise the values of participation, sharing and enjoyment.
Parents also have the right to withdraw their children from assembly. Again, parents wanting to exercise this right should make their wishes known to the Principal, in writing.
ATTENDANCE AND REGISTRATION
All children should attend school for the 190 days which the law requires, unless they are ill.
A courtesy phone call to the secretary can be made if your child will not be at school that day. For school records, however, please send a note with your child explaining the absence when he/she returns to school.
School starts at 9.00 am with class registration.
Children who are late arriving after 9.00 am will be marked absent and the attendance register will then be adjusted accordingly.
Please ensure your child arrives in good time for school as formal teaching begins at 9.00 am.
A note explaining your child's absence from school should be presented to the class teacher on his/her return.
CHILDREN LEAVING SCHOOL DURING THE DAY
In all cases where children have to leave school during school time, a simple request in writing must be presented to the class teacher. This is retained by the teacher and is essential for accuracy of school records.
It is not enough to present a dental or hospital appointment card as these cannot be retained by us. Parents must on these occasions collect their children from school and sign the withdrawal form in the office. We do not permit pupils to leave the premises unaccompanied. I know you will understand that these arrangements are necessary to ensure the safety of our pupils.
The school uniform helps bond the pupils of all years and classes and emphasises the togetherness of the Model.
Our school uniform is:

No particular supplier is recommended and parents are advised to shop around various chain stores. Ties can be purchased from the office. In place of shirt, tie and jumper, pupils may wear our gold polo shirt and embroidered sweatshirt. The school actively promotes and encourages the wearing of school uniform. Please support the school by ensuring your child is always in uniform.
Children are discouraged from wearing jewellery to school. If children have their ears pierced, then they should wear studs which must be covered during P.E. lessons. If children do come to school with inappropriate jewellery, then their teacher may require that they remove the items, or that they do not take part in activities where the teacher feels that the jewellery constitutes a safety hazard.
Children are expected to provide suitable clothing for PE and games. All children from P1 - P7 must have a pair of named plimsoles and P4 - P7 children must have a change of clothing (shorts and a T-shirt or tracksuit are most suitable). P1 and P2 children must keep their PE slippers in a named PE bag.
NAMES ON CLOTHING
Please ensure all clothing including coats are clearly and permanently named.
P4 - P7 Pupils
As the children move up the school we expect them to have many of their own items of equipment for use both at home and in school.
These should include;
: HB pencils,
: small set of coloured pencils, in preference to felt tips,
: a white rubber,
: a 30 cm ruler (plastic or wooden),
: paper glue ie Pritt-stick.
Children in P6 and P7 should have their own pocket-size dictionary.
: the Collins ‘English Dictionary' is extremely good.
All children from P4 to P7 learn the recorder. Descant Recorders can be purchased from the office at a cost of £5.00

The Board of Governors of the Model Schools is anxious to uphold the charter of the
Model Schools and to pursue the provision of ‘United Education' by welcoming
pupils from all cultures and traditions, both political and religious and thus
maintaining our traditional ethos.
With this background as the basis of our thinking the Board of Governors has
determined that the following criteria be applied, in the event of the number of pupils
applying for places being greater than the admissions number, in the order set down
- 1. Children whose parents are currently employed in the school.
- 2. Children whose parents have attended this school or Christ Church Primary School.
- 3. Children who have or have had a brother or sister enrolled in the school.
- 4. Children of those parents whose work situation within the last year has necessitated a relocation of employment within the city area.
- 5. If there are more pupils satisfying the last one of the above criteria that can be applied than there are places remaining then selection will take place on the basis of the chronological order of the ages of the children.
It is the responsibility of the parents to ensure that all necessary information is available to enable the Governors to apply the above criteria.
