TÚS MAITH

Is scéal deimhnitheach é an dátheangachas ar fud an domhain.  Caitheann seasca faoin gcéad de dhaonra an domhain a saol trí mheán dhá theanga ar a laghad, 40 milliún acu san AE!

Léirigh saineolaithe ó gach cearn den domhain go bhfuil an dátheangachas ina bhuntáiste.  Rinne siad a gcuid conclúidí i ndiaidh teisteanna casta a dhéanamh faoin dóigh a smaoiníonn daoine agus an dóigh a bhfoghlaimíonn páistí!

Trí sheans a thabhairt do do pháiste a bheith dhátheangach agus scileanna teangeolaíochta a úsáid beidh tú ag feabhsú a chumas intinneacha.  Gach duine a labhraíonn Gaeilge - tá siad dhátheangach! De réir mar a éiríonn do pháiste níos sine déanfaidh an dátheangachas teangacha eile a fhoghlaim níos fusa dó.  Tuigfidh sé cad é mar a oibríonn teangacha agus tuigfidh sé gur tábhachtaí ciall ná fuaim focal.  Aithneoidh sé cosúlachtaí agus difríochtaí idir theangacha níos éasca. Le dearcadh eile ar an saol osclóidh an dátheangachas traidisiúin agus cultúir eile dó.  Beidh meas aige ar a chultúr féin agus ar chultúir an domhain.  Féadann an Ghaeilge cuidiú leis an domhain uile a oscailt do/di!

ACH ... NÍ LABHRAÍMSE GAEILGE

Níl Gaeilge ag tromlach thuistí na bpáistí i scoileanna lán-Ghaeilge agus tá na paistí ag dul chun cinn go breá.  Cruthaíonn torthaí na bpáistí é!  Fiú muna bhfuil Gaeilge agat is é do dhearcadh i dtaobh na teanga is tabhachtaí.

Thig leat Gaeilge do pháiste a spreagadh agus a mholadh go fóill - iarr air an t-amhrán úr a d'fhoghlaim sé a chanadh; amharc ar na cartúin Ghaeilge leis - agus iarr air rud éigin a insint duit fúthu.  Seans go bhfoghlaimeoidh tú féin cúpla focal!

... CAD FAOIN BHÉARLA?

Ní gá a bheith buartha.  Leanann gach páiste an Curaclam Coitianta don Bhéarla i dTuaisceart na hÉireann.  Má amharcann tú ar thorthaí scrúdaithe in Éirinn - fiú don Bhéarla agus don litríocht - tá na páistí i scoileanna lán-Ghaeilge  lán chomh maith le scoileanna ar bith eile.  Maise, bhain páistí ó Bhunscoil Cholmcille cuid mhaith duaiseanna cáiliúla d'obair liteartha cruthaitheach.

Tá sé cruthaithe go dtig le páistí cuid mhaith teanga a fhoghlaim ag an am chéanna, mar sin de ní fadhb ar bith í an dátheangachas.

BUNTÁISTÍ BREISE TUMOIDEACHAIS

Um an dtaca a fhágfaidh do pháiste Bunscoil Cholmcille beidh sé dhátheangach agus ábalta leanúint lena chuid oideachais i gceachtar den dá theanga, in inmhe teangacha eile a fhoghlaim níos éasca agus, dar ndóighe, scrúdaithe GCSE agus A-leibhéal i nGaeilge a dhéanamh gan stró!  Maise, is iomaí iardhalta a dhéanann GCSE sa chéad nó sa dara bhliain sa mheánscoil!

A HEAD START

Speaking two languages is a success story all over the world.  Sixty per cent of the world's population live their lives through the medium of at least two languages, 40 million of them in the EU!

Specialists from all over the world have shown that being bilingual can give people a head start.  They have come to their conclusions after carrying out complex tests on how people think and on how children learn.

By giving your child the chance to be bilingual and to use his language skills, you will be enhancing his mental abilities.  Everyone who speaks Irish is - naturally bilingual! As your child grows older being bilingual will make it easier for him to learn other languages.  He will be aware of how languages work and appreciate that the meaning is more important than the sound of words.  He will recognise similarities and differences between languages much more easily. With a different perspective on the world bilingualism will serve as an introduction to other traditions and cultures.  He/she will appreciate  his/her own culture and the diversity of others.  Irish can help to open the doors of the whole world to him/her!

BUT ... I DON'T SPEAK IRISH

Neither do the parents of most of the children in Irish language schools and the children are doing just fine.  The results of the pupils demonstrate this!  Even if you don't speak Irish, your attitude towards the language is the most important factor.  You can still encourage and praise your child's Irish - ask him/her to sing the new song he/she learned; watch the Irish cartoons with him/her - and ask him/her to tell you something about them.  You may just pick up some Irish yourself!

... WHAT ABOUT ENGLISH?

There's no need to worry.  All children follow the common curriculum for English in N. Ireland.  If you look at exam results in Ireland - even for English language and literature - those in Irish-medium schools are just as good as those in any other schools.  In fact, children from Bunscoil Cholmcille have won several national prestigious creative literary awards. It has been shown that children can learn several languages at once, so bilingualism poses no problem.

ADDITIONAL ADVANTAGES OF IRISH-MEDIUM EDUCATION

By the time your child leaves the Bunscoil he/she will be bilingual and able to continue his/her education in either of the two languages, learn additional languages more easily and, indeed, to sit Irish GCSE and A-level exams without difficulty!  Indeed many past pupils sit their GCSE in their first or second year in secondary school!

MIND YOUR LANGUAGE!

The chance to learn a second language is best taken when children are very young, if the opportunity is available - think of how a child learns her/his first language. The reason for this is that we lose the ability to naturally absorb a language when we are still very young - approximately 11-12 years old at the latest. This is also further reduced by the amount of exposure we have to the language we are learning.

The chance to learn another language in the easiest way and at the most successful time is a one-time opportunity for children and this is why linguists all over the world have established language schools for children at the beginning of their schooling lives - just like Bunscoil Cholmcille.

The possibility of sending your child(ren) to Naíscoil Dhoire or/and Bunscoil Cholmcille is, we believe, worth your consideration and we are available to answer any queries.

Unfortunately the chance won't present itself again for your child; rather, the capacity that young children have is lost to them within a short period of years!
